Crappie

Post by Limbshot » May 7th, 2014, 1:18 pm

Went on an afternoon trip to LOZ a little over a month ago to catch some slabs with a buddy of mine and man did we get into them! In 3 hours, 5 of us caught 180. Normally we would have quit when we caught our limit of 75, but we were having too much fun to stop. Not only were we catching fish, but we were catching good ones. We did not bring home a fish under 12 inches!!! Just throwing a tube about 18-24 inches under a bobber and they were smashing it. We only fished one 80 yard stretch of bank, and to say they were stacked up there is an understatement!!!

Those kind of days are rare but great. Those are some nice looking fish. They look like Truman size crappie. Were most of them black crappie? I am headed to MTL next week for some bank action.

Yes. Most were blacks, but we caught a few whites in the mix. Our biggest that day was 14 inches, but she got released back into the water. Gorgeous fish and we really had no reason to take her life.

I agree, whenever we get into them like that this time of year we will throw back some of the bigger females and keep the big males. we did a trip like that to Truman a couple of years ago and didn't keep anything under 11" but release any over 13".

Exactly RB. Trust me, we still had plenty of meat!!! All the boys I was fishing with already had a bunch, so I was able to keep the meat from all these bad boys! THat was 150 gorgeous filets.

Probably going to hit MTL early next week and try to get into some. They are just now hitting the banks there.
