My opening morning!

Post by Limbshot » April 21st, 2015, 2:23 pm

Well nto to be outdone by my son, I was fortunate to get it done yesterday. Had a bird roosted Sunday evening that turned out to be farther west than I thought and was on the neighbor's place. We have permission to hunt there, but where I was set up, there was NO WAY for me to move on him even though I knew right where he was going to go at flydown. Sure enough, he pitched down and went right up to the field. I moved to get on the edge of the field, hoping he was alone and might walk the field edge. Instead, he kept going west, gobbling about every 2 minutes, just to rub it in my face. Then out of nowhere, another bird sprints out to the middle of the field, about 200 yards out and starts strutting. I called, and the original bird gobbled, but this bird never did, in fact, I never heard this bird gobble all morning. After about a minute, he breaks off into another dead sprint right at me and cuts the distance in half, now at 100 yards, he starts strutting again, and I look over to see three more bird coming from where he ran from originally, thinking they were hens, I figured I was done, but a close inspection with the binocs showed them to be jakes, and this bird wanted nothing to do with them. They half strutted around and started moving towards him and he came out of strut and started at me again. At 60 yards he turned and started to the north and I called lightly and he went into strut, and turned right at me. Then he just started walking and closed the distance to 20 yards and started strutting, spitting and drumming right in front of me. I watched the show for a little bit until he walked behind a bush in front of me and got into position. When he cleared the bush, I eased back on the trigger and let him have it. I'd like to genuinely thank Samcro for the great deal on the new shotgun! Teamed up with a red dot scope and Winchester Longbeard shells, that turkey took a lot of pellets to the head and neck. My weekends are pretty full, so time will be scarce. It is always awesome to take one off the family farm and share some quality time with my Dad. Another hunt I will not soon forget!!!

That turkey is nearly as big as you. Reminds me of Robin@AimLow.

:rotflmao: Thanks PS, you are not the first person to make the comment about the turkey being the same size as me! Always special to share one with Pops!

Good show, and good to see that Mossberg is getting to taste more blood. I told you all you had to do was point it in the right direction, as it was trained by the CRO.

I had considered putting a dot on that gun, but never got around to it. Seems like it's a good combo.

Yes sir. I worked to tune it in and it will be lethal to 50 yards with the dot. Could have checked it beyond that, but honestly just ran out of time. Love the set up. Glad I am carrying on its proud tradition. :)

That's his turkey "Special Sauce". They call it "Still Steamin' Bird Semen". Nothing brings in the birds like fresh, warm jizz.

LMAO, close. It's actually just Bust-a-Buck cover scent lotion. Do to deer being around, I still try to remain as scent free as possible. It worked great this morning, as I had three does pass by me at 20 yards while I was working a bird.
