Tagged out Friday morning

Well Friday morning was interesting to say the least. I had roosted a bird the evening before and knew his general whereabouts and had a good plan for Friday morning. Headed out, and the first time he gobbled, he was inside 100 yards. I snuck to about 60 and set up. Just as it was light enough for fly down, it started raining pretty hard and he shut up. Thunder rolled in the distance, and he gobbled, but was about 100 yards north of me, he flew down in the rain and was heading away. I figured he was going to a field on the neighbor's and was moving to cut him off when I heard a bird gobbling over by the field already. Clearly a different bird. Now the rain was increasing and there was a lot more thunder, but it was all distant. The birds were gobbling like crazy, despite the weather. The thunder really kept them fired up. I wanted to move to the field edge (we have permission to hunt the neighbor's) so I quickly worked my way across a draw, crossed the fence, and got 15 yards from the field and waited. Another crack of thunder, and a bird gobbled just on the other side of a rose bush. At a distance of 20 yards, I saw the culprit in strut through the rose. He was walking south and needed to move about two more feet to be in the open. He cleared, and I shot and down he went. It was a tricky shot with fogged up glasses and a wet red dot, but the old Mossberg smacked him hard. I was truly surprised to walk up on a jake! He completely fooled me. Gobbling, strutting, and his wing tips were completely warn down from strutting. Oh well, it was nice to tag out in my first season with the new turkey thumper!!!

Good job LS. Who knows maybe it was an old bird with a short beard. You have had a good year in the field.

I definitely can't complain. I appreciate your effort, but he had 1/4" spurs and the classic jake tail too.

Definitely all the gun. I rode it like a broomstick right to where the turkeys where and laid one out!!! That thing is amazing.
