Gar are starting to move up!!!!!!!

Post by swmoDukR » April 5th, 2005, 2:44 pm

Went last night and noticed the gar are on the move Image. Ended up only shooting 3 between 36 inches and 20 inches. Missed one that we'd guess would 30 lbs plus (gar fever) Image and another one we couldn't get a shot off before it sunk out of sight. Didn't see the gar until about hour before midnight and near the main lake.

Also shot 17 common's 3 to 10 lbs, and 1 12lbs buffalo.

John...thanks for the report. Were you up in Swan or one of the ohter creeks? I got the canoe rigged out for shooting now with the outrigger pontoons, so it can't tip over, but it's too lightweight for any kind of lighting system, so any shooting I do will have to be daytime. The gar have been in the river above Pomme de Terre for a couple of weeks. Haven't heard any reports about the carp moving shallow, but Fishnxs and his buddy Ralph were fishing with us last week and tied into a big gar on an ultralight spinning rig. He said it was exciting until the line parted.
I re-rigged with 200 lb line for this year, and have some 400# if more diameter is needed for the rubber wheels to grab it on the retrieve. Good luck, and go stick 'em.

Down aways further below Kdock. Haven't found any carp during the day, know their there just hard to see em on the mud flats.

10-4. From the looks of the weather reports, you may be seeing some higher water pretty soon. We had big storms last night, with another wave or two of them coming in from Oklahoma again today. That usually get the Pomme to rocking and rolling, which raises the main lake a couple of feet. When the suspended sediment clears, the big carp start to root around on the banks. Bet you're going to really enjoy shooting out of the new boat this year.

Pomme was rocking and rolling today, but is still in the banks. Got the little Black Widow takedown out of the case tonight to check it over, and everything looks ready to go. The Synergy reel is loaded with 120 lb Spectra line, and the bow is only 32 lb draw, so if I remember to push the button, everything should be OK. The big gar will be moving upstream in Pomme any day now, and when the water clears they should be good targets as they swim out of the six foot steel "whistles" the county uses for low water crossings.....yeeeeeeha....thwack!
