got a question for ya Micus,... while squirrel hunting this morning, I came across some small orange fungus'. They were growing from the ground, only an inch tall. Some larger than others. The underneath side of the dome was smooth, with the outside edges curling under. No "gills". The stalk was course-like. Any idea what these are? Gonna do some research, but you seem to know what to look for, so thought Id ask you first. Thanks, Keri

After some research, I believe Ive found a patch of Chanterells.... not sure.

Keri,

If they didn't have gills, then you're probably right. They're pretty good in scrambled eggs. Image

Micus could expound on this, but there is a similar looking shroom called a Jack-O Lantern. However, they do have gills, and grow on wood, not soil. Ya don't wanna be eatin' those. Image

Sounds like it could be Cinnabar-red Chanterelles. Without seeing an image I can't say for sure. Stalks should be smooth. They are a very bright orange. If they are a more light orange they might be a Smooth Chanterelles. do a web search on those names and see what you find. This is about time for them!

These were pretty small. About 15 in a scattered bunch. Some were only a few inches high. Do they normally stay the same size or will the grow larger? Cant get back out until Wednesday. There werent enough shrooms there to make a meal.

By The Way.... they were very bright orange. No gills, smooth stem on the outside... tough on the inside...kinda hard to pick. Had to pinch them off at the ground.

If they are Chanterelles eventually the dome will spread out, turn upward and create a jagged vase-like shape or "flower". If they are Cinnibar-red they won't get much bigger. If they are smooth Chanterelles they will turn into a "flower" while growing to 3"-4". They will continue to come up as long as it rains.

Found some Red-cracked Boletes yesterday. One of the first boletes that come up in the summer. Didn't have a camera with me. They went into a stir-fry with potato, onion, green pepper, zucinni and a little salt and pepper. Served with a couple of duck eggs.

Image That looks good, Micus.
