Lost a monster

Post by Limbshot » May 29th, 2007, 12:07 pm

Well we floated the old G-nade again this past Sunday. Weather was perfect in the morning, and had a good float. Once again, we caught a ton of fish. I finally hooked a really good one on a small crankbait, I fought him for quite a while, since I was only using 4 pound test, then he just unhooked. I don't know exactly how big he was, but he was very close to the 20 inch mark. We did get to see him one time before he unhooked. It stinks to lose one that size, as it just doesn't happen very often, maybe next time. Anybody else been out on the rivers?

Fished Big River on Sunday evening. I caught a few smallies, but none the size you are talking about. May very well fish the upper Gasconade this weekend.

Good luck to you. Haven't been on the Piney in years. Need to go again sometime, just have too much fun on the Gasconade. If everything goes right, we will be on it again this weekend.

I fished the Big Piney when I was working at Fort Wood in 2005 but haven't fished it since. I will be going this weekend to the Gasconade up near Manes and Competition.

Wow, you are gonna be way up there!!! Never been up that far before. Is it floatable up there, or is it all wade fishing?

Better be careful up that way TH. I grew up about 8 miles from Competition. Never fished up there, but sure did shoot the crap out of some quail, course that was when there were still quail in that area.

It can be floatable, but only with small jonboats or canoes and only at certain times of the year. There are some bigger holes as well.

Triton, I know some families down there and have access to the river from their farms, so no problem for me down there. Didn't you say you used to live near Grovespring?

Yep, when I lived there the population was 100, now many years later the population is 100. Image

In fact, we used to bird hunt on a farm that was split by the Gasconade River. We would find around 10 or so coveys before lunch and come back and hunt the other side of the river and find another 10 or so coveys. Of course, they used to have the big Fox Hunt down that way when I was a kid along the Elk Creek.

I've fished Elk Creek at the farm where the fox hunts took place; at least that's what the people I was with told me. It is a shame that the quail populations have dropped so much over the years.
