Pred Call

Post by Richard » November 27th, 2005, 8:30 pm

I am wanting to try my luck at pred hunting. What would be the cheapest but best call to buy. I have a gun I think will work fine .223 mini 14. I hope everyone survived the storms that just passed through.

If you get it figured out, maybe I'll let you thin out the coyotes at the Tick Farm. It's in Barton County.

If you use a diaphragm turkey call you can make rabbit squeals that work well with very little practice.

You can call coyotes with your own mouth by simply maaaaaaaing as pathetically as possible. That has worked for me on adult coyote a few times.

IMHO, the Crittr Call (standard size) is about the best call made for the money. It's an open reed call, it's versatile and it's only about $8. I'm sure I've had/have more than a hundred different mouth calls and this one is the one I always go to first. I can't tell you how many coyotes and fox I've called in with it over the years - You won't go wrong with it.

Lohman makes a good wounded rabbit call. Also, turkey calls work just soundin like a turk. If you use the turkey call, put out a couple two or three turkey decoys.

Here is your "Best-Buy" for a beginner. DVD gives insight into calls and hunting sequences show calls in action.
Calls immitate young coyotes as well as prey sounds, thus getting more responses when howling.
